Opposition

It’s been a pretty quiet couple of days here.  Absolutely nothing going on that I would put in the realm of miraculous.  There have been good things, sure.  There have also been bad things.  I’m trying to not focus on the negative, but that doesn’t mean that it doesn’t exist.  I’m coming to realize that there has to be a balance in all things.  Some of the negatives were just as negative as the positives I give thanks for.  We had some really great days this last month, now it is balancing itself out.  I’m starting to better realize just how much of a learning opportunity this life is.

I’m remembering a song from several years back called Opposition (by Carol Lynn Pearson):

You can never know the good if you’ve never known the bad,
You can never be happy if you’ve never been sad.
You’ve go to taste the bitter so you can know the sweet.
You’ve got to be hungry to be glad you can eat.

You’ve got to be sick to be grateful for your health.
You’ve got to need money to appreciate wealth.
There’s got to be some problems to rise above.
You’ve got to be lonely so that you can know love.

In other words, maybe one of the reasons that God does not give us all of the help we want, when we want it, is because we can’t appreciate it if it is too commonplace, or without enough opposition.  I know that logically, but I have a really hard time appreciating it.  So, here is a short list of my lists of things that I have come to much better appreciate because of opposition.

  • Predictable income
  • Work opportunities
  • Our nation
  • Convenience/fast food
  • Window shopping
  • Utilities
  • Cars
  • Air conditioning
  • Logical thinking
  • Mental health
  • Physical health
  • Sleep
  • Optimism
  • Health insurance
  • Service professionals
  • Extended family
  • Love
  • Home ownership
  • Knowledge in many areas

I could probably go on, but that is good for today.  Feel free to add anything that you appreciate more because of the struggle.
